How to add auto index in Microsoft Word

Very often we have to create an index in the top of a documents in Microsoft Word. What we do? We usually type manually to create the index content. It is annoying to compose it manually. You can create the Index content automatically. Let see how to add auto index in MS Word 2007. Follow the steps:

  • Open a MS Word Document.
  • Click on Reference Tab.
  • Go to Table of Contents.
  • And select an Automatic Table item.

  • Read and click on OK on Popup Message.

In your document you could see the following text as there is no content in the Word document.

Start compose your documents. And set your heading, sub heading in proper way. By following the steps:

Go to Home and select the Heading by clicking the heading style.

Similarly Select the sub heading style. One thing is noted that all main heading should be same style, all sub heading should be same style and so on.
Now it is time to Automatically update the Index content in the document.

  • Go to the Index which you already added.
  • Click inside it and click on Update Table.

Wow!! you have done a great work. And your Index with page number should be look like:

After the interval of composing document you can update the table and the Word will update the index automatically according to your content. You can also do the same thing at the last of composing.

Finally Save the file.

What would be the result if you forgot to update the table after editing and saved the file. Don’t worry open the file and Click on Update Table and save it.
